Checking Slope Again

After the concrete sets, recheck the slope with a level. If you find a low spot, apply a thin layer of fresh mortar to correct it. A 2 mm error over 1 meter can cause pooling.

Step 3: Channel Installation and Alignment

Priming and Joining

Clean the ends of each channel unit with a dry cloth. Apply PVC primer to both joining faces, then apply solvent cement. Join the units firmly and hold for 30 seconds. Wipe off excess cement immediately. I use a rubber mallet to tap units together gently. Never hit the grate seating surface.

Leveling Each Unit

Place the first unit on the concrete base at the outlet end. Check level across the width and along the length. Use plastic shims under the channel to adjust height. The top of the channel should sit 3-5 mm below the finished surface level. This prevents vehicle tires from hitting the edge.

Install all 12 units. Check alignment with a string line every 3 meters. My test data shows that a deviation of more than 5 mm over 12 meters causes grate misalignment. Adjust immediately before the cement sets.

Step 4: Grouting and Finishing

Grouting locks the channel in place and prevents water from bypassing the system. Use a dry mortar mix (3 parts sand to 1 part cement) with minimal water. Wet mortar shrinks and cracks.

Applying the Grout

Pack the grout tightly along both sides of the channel. Fill all voids under the channel edges. Use a pointing trowel to create a smooth fillet. The grout should slope away from the channel to direct water into the grate. Allow 24 hours for curing before loading.

Installing the Grates

Place each grate into its channel. Tap with a rubber mallet to seat it. Check that all grates sit flush. If a grate rocks, remove it and adjust the seating surface with a file. In my project, two grates needed filing by 1 mm each.

Step 5: Testing and Common Mistakes
